Facebook warns advertising revenue growth will slow
Facebook has warned growth in advertising revenues will slow "meaningfully" in the next few months as it tries to avoid alienating users.
The social media giant's chief financial officer David Wehner said there was a limit on the number of ads it could put on people's timelines.
Shares fell 7% in after-hours trading.
The comments came as Facebook reported profits of $2.4bn (£1.9bn) between July and September, up 166% from the same period in 2015.
Most of Facebook's revenues came from adverts, of which mobile accounted for 84%.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg described the results as "another good quarter".
Nearly 1.1 billion people now log onto Facebook on their mobiles every day, compared with 894 million a year ago.
But it has not been all plain sailing for the firm. In the past few months it has apologised for unfairly removing certain content, and admitted it overestimated how much video users have watched for the last two years.
Meanwhile Whatsapp, the messaging app Facebook bought for $19bn in early 2014, has been warned by European privacy watchdogs about sharing user data with its parent company.
'Opportunity'
Facebook expected to add fewer adverts and for "ad revenue growth rates [to] come down meaningfully" in 2017, Mr Wehner said on Wednesday.
Analysts argued it would force the business to invest in other ways of making money.
"The traditional engine of their growth will slow down, but Mr Wehner didn't give numbers on what it could make from new revenue streams," said Martin Garner, an analyst at CCS Insight.
Josh Olson, an analyst at Edward Jones, said the group could still make more money from charging advertisers higher prices and through adding new customers.
"We have been down this road before with Facebook, they have invested something like this in mobile and we have seen it pay off.
So we are looking at it as an opportunity," he said.
Facebook is trialling a number of other potential money-making projects including a marketplace that allows users to sell items, and is experimenting with chat 'bots' in its messaging app, with a view to companies using them as a way to communicate with customers.

iPhone 7 to come in five colours and include one VERY useful feature for photo fanatics
New iPhone 7 details have emerged just days before Apple's big event in San Francisco on September 7, where the company is widely expected to unveil its next flagship smartphone.
The details come from well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, who issued a new research note on Saturday.
According to the note, the iPhone 7 will include one very useful feature for photo fanatics - it will have four LED flash lights, up from two in the iPhone 6s .
Furthermore, two of these LEDs will be in cool colours, and two in warm colours, and Apple is also expected to add an ambient light sensor to the iPhone 7.
While the iPhone 6s ' camera is widely praised, it still struggles to take good photos in low-light situations.
It is unclear whether the new features will appear on the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 or just the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus, which is also expected to feature a dual-lens camera capable of taking SLR-quality photos.
Either way, Apple is clearly stepping up its photography capabilities in the face of growing competition from the likes of Samsung, Sony and Huawei.
According to Kuo, the iPhone 7 Plus camera will feature two 12-megapixel lenses - one wide angle, and one telephoto.
The new design is expected to offer optical zoom and light field camera applications.
The research note, seen by AppleInsider , also contains a few other juicy tidbits.
According to Kuo, the iPhone 7 will boast a next-generation A10 processor that could be as fast as 2.4GHz - a dramatic increase over the existing A9 chip
It will also be waterproof to a depth of one metre for up to 30 minutes - a rating known as IPX7, which is the same as the Apple Watch .
To accommodate this waterproofing, it will have a redesigned pressure-sensitive click-less Home button, that will provide haptic feedback to mimic a clicking sensation when the button is pressed.
The iPhone 7 will come in 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB storage options , eliminating both the 16GB and 64GB tiers, according to Kuo.
It will feature the same "True Tone" display technology the company unveiled earlier this year on the 9.7-inch iPad Pro , and will come in five colours - silver, gold, rose gold, dark black and "piano black".
The glossy piano black variant could be limited in availability, so Apple is expected to focus on large-storage models for that shade.
Finally, Kuo reiterated the rumour that Apple will remove the 3.5mm headphone jack .
The iPhone 7 will reportedly ship with both Lightning EarPods and a Lightning-to-headphone adapter in the box.
The change has supposedly be made to make space for a second speaker with an audio amplifier.
Apple is expected to unveil its iPhone 7 at an event in San Francisco on September 7.

Samsung shares fell sharply on Monday, hitting a two-month low after the firm urged users not to use it and exchange devices due to fears it might catch fire.
The South Korean company's shares dropped more than 5% on Monday morning.
Samsung recalled 2.5 million phones last week after reports of the device exploding during or after charging.
Airline passengers were warned by US authorities not to use or charge the phones while on board.
Aviation authorities in several other countries and individual airlines have since then also banned the use of the devices on their flights.

WhatsApp introduces new camera features
With WhatsApp's new camera features, people can now write or draw on photos and videos as well as add emojis to express themselves.
"Now, when you capture a new photo or video or share one which is already on your phone, you will automatically see the new editing tools," WhatsApp said in a post.
WhatsApp has also added a convenient zooming feature for recording videos.
Just slide your finger up and down to zoom in and out and supports the front-facing flash.
The new camera features will roll out on Android phones starting Tuesday and on Apple iPhones soon.

Two simple methods to ensure WhatsApp cannot share your phone numbers outside the app
Instant Messaging app WhatsApp announced just yesterday it would start sharing data with Facebook as part of an update to its privacy policy - the first time the service has changed this in four years.
Published on Thursday , the updated policy gives WhatsApp permission to share user data including phone numbers with Facebook, claiming the move will better connect the two services.
WhatsApp claims that this will allow the social network to suggest phone contacts as friends, and also show you more relevant ads.
However, since the announcement, a workaround has come to light, which lets users opt out of sharing their phone numbers with Facebook.
According to Motherboard , there are actually two ways to opt out, depending on whether you've blindly accepted the terms already, or not.
The first method has to be done before you accept the messaging app's new terms of service. Rather than clicking "agree" button, select the smaller "read more" option below it, and untick the box that reads "Share my WhatsApp account information with Facebook..."
The second method is for those who have already accepted those new terms.
Since you have 30 days to opt out, you're still within your rights to backtrack on your initial acceptance of the policy.
Head to the app's settings menu, and then select the "account" tab.

Instagram Blows Past Competition to 500M Mark
The Instagram community has become more global, the Facebook-owned company also said, with more than 80 percent of Instagrammers living outside the United States.
Instagram's user base has more than doubled in two years, surging past rival photo-sharing site Snapchat. Its growth spurt comes at a time when Twitter growth appears to be stagnating as it struggles to find an economic model that will turn into long-term profitability.
Power and Simplicity
Instagram's success versus the competition comes down to the simplicity of the site and its ability to draw in the users social media companies covet most, said Jan Dawson, chief analyst at Jackdaw Research.
"Instagram's premise is ultimately extremely simple -- sharing pictures, with optional filters," he told the E-Commerce Times. "There's almost no learning curve, but at the same time the app is fairly powerful."
Instagram has become one of the top go-to apps for teenagers, who are attracted to the site because it is a very powerful photo-sharing app that does not require a lot of complicated steps to master, Dawson said. It also has relaxed some of the restrictions imposed over the years, while adding some powerful functionality.
"It's sort of like a visually focused version of Facebook, with the same social structure, but simpler, more-focused forms of content."
Beating the Skeptics
CEO Kevin Systrom and Technical Lead Mike Krieger launched Instagram in 2010, and Facebook acquired it for US$1 billion in cash and stock two years later. Facebook has managed to provide Instagram with some of the essential growth tools it needed, but in a lot of important ways it allowed the company to find its own path forward without upsetting loyal members.
"Instagram reaching 500 million is a combination of both being a visually focused social network and benefiting from the halo effect of being owned by Facebook and thereby being effectively integrated into the Facebook ecosystem," said Tim Mulligan, senior analyst at Midia Research.
Instagram boosted the strength of Facebook's mobile photo-sharing functionality. However, when he announced the acquisition, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made a point of saying that Instagram users could continue to post on other social networks and keep their Instagram and Facebook followers separate if that's what they wanted to.
Built-In Advantages
Instagram is taking advantage of its position as part of the larger Facebook ecosystem, said Mukul Krishna, head of the digital media practice at Frost & Sullivan, which gives companies a great deal of leverage to convert their customer data into leverage with advertisers that want to reach their customers.
They want to be sure they are "reaching the right customer on the right platform with the right information at the right time," he told the E-Commerce Times. "That is the kind of marketing nirvana they want to achieve."

How to Speed Up a Android Smartphone
They're clogged up like an aging sewer on the wrong side of town.
Just like on a PC, bits of app and OS code become discombobulated -- orphaned from the parent program. Onboard digital debris becomes disoriented like a drunk stumbling out of a favored hole-in-the-wall; jumbled lethargy sets in, and the device can take forever to start or become sticky in operation.
Well, just like a PC -- or a run-down apartment house, for that matter -- you can freshen up a gloopy smartphone. Here's how to go about speeding up a slowing Android smartphone.
Get Rid of Superfluous Apps
The purpose of this procedure is not so much to free space but to remove any apps that might be performing poorly. Apps can contain all sorts of trouble-prone, permissions-based polling, checking and syncing.
Step 1: Open the Settings area by touching the Settings cogwheel-like icon. Then scroll through to the Apps menu item. In older versions of Android, it's labeled Applications.
Step 2: Touch the Downloaded tab and scroll through the list of apps. These are the apps that you've installed over the years.
Step 3: Touch the app label for any app that you haven't used in six months and press Clear Cache, then Clear Data and then Disable or Uninstall, depending on options proffered.
Tip: Be ruthless here and purge anything you're not using -- it's a lot easier than identifying rogue behavior app-by-app.
Step 4: Test by restarting the phone and unscientifically identifying whether performance has improved. Key benchmarks are time-to-start and speed-of-scroll between home screens.
If the phone is feeling nimble again, you've identified your issue.
Make Some Space
Step 1: Open the Apps menu item again from within Settings.
Step 2: Choose Options and then Sort by size.
Step 3: Scroll through the first few apps -- the most memory-hungry -- and clear the caches by pressing the Clear Cache button within each App label. This will free memory, allowing more operating headroom. Then test.
Step 4: Check storage by opening the Settings area again. Then scroll through to the Storage menu item.
View the Internal Storage graphical bar. If it's full, with little space being indicated as available, install LeveloKment's app Storage Analyser, available free in the Google Play store, and run it.
Tip: This app will identify the largest files on your device -- files that may be phantom -- and allow you to delete or move them off the device, thus freeing space. Then test.
Reinstall the Factory Stock Software
If the previous steps haven't solved the problem, this likely will. Like rehab (or the drunk tank) for our wrong-side-of-the-tracks inhabitant, this operation may sound like a big deal and a lot of work, and unfortunately it is, because you have to reconfigure your apps.
Step 1: Open the Backup and Reset menu item from Settings and check Backup My Data along with your Google account details if prompted.
Tip: Leave the phone connected to the Internet overnight if you are newly creating a backup. This will give the Google servers time to pluck the settings data like WiFi connections and passwords, which it will restore later. You can skip this, but you'll have to re-enter a bunch more stuff manually.
Step 2: Select Factory Data Reset from the same menu and follow the prompts to perform a full wipe and OS reinstall.
Tip: Before a reset save, off-device, any internal storage-stored media files, like captured photographs. A reset wipes internal storage.
Step 3: Allow the phone to restart and follow the prompts to set up your Google account on the device anew.
Tip: If your downloaded apps don't immediately show, you can kick-start the installation from Google's Play store My Apps menu item.
Step 4: Reconfigure your apps' settings.
Tip: This is the tried-and-true method to get the phone back to stock and a just-out-of-box state. Avoid restoring from backups in this case because you may reintroduce the issue or issues.

iPhone 7 Draws Tepid Notices
The practical improvements in the new iPhone are praiseworthy, wrote Andrew Cunningham in his review for Ars Technica, but he cautioned would-be buyers about the price they would have to pay for the upgrade.
"The iPhone 7 is a very good phone with the sorts of logical, useful upgrades that Apple typically delivers with new hardware," Cunningham wrote. "Waterproofing and better battery life have been common iPhone feature requests for years, and the camera and speed improvements are nothing to sneeze at, but you'll need to buy into Apple's vision of the future if you want to get them."
No Buttons or Wires
That vision includes a world without buttons or wires.
Among the new features in iPhone 7 is the replacement of a physical home button with pressure sensors and haptic vibration motors that simulate the feel of a button.
"It's clear that Apple is continuing its approach of removing any mechanical moving parts from their devices where possible," IHS Markit Senior Director Ian Fogg told TechNewsWorld.
Apple also has omitted the headphone jack in the new iPhone.
"This move was done with the clear vision of making the iPhone experience completely wireless in the future," Creative Strategies President Tim Bajarin told TechNewsWorld.
Prototype Phone?
While some reviewers saw the iPhone 7 as a harbinger of Apple things to come, they couldn't hide their disappointment in the product in their hands.
"The entire time I was using the iPhone 7, I felt like I had a prototype of next year's rumored drastic iPhone redesign disguised as an iPhone 6," Nilay Patel wrote in The Verge.
"All those bold bets on the future are legitimately exciting," he continued, "but here in the present using the iPhone 7 in a case feels a lot like using an iPhone 6s with a weirder home button and more adapters."
There's more to the new iPhone than the here and now, David Pierce, writing for Wired, also suggested.
"So, no, the iPhone 7 won't blow your mind with its design or features," he noted.
"It's still a fantastic phone. And philosophically, it feels like Apple is throwing open a door. The iPhone 7 might not be a revolution, but it might be the catalyst for lots of them," Pierce continued. "Your phone will be better in a few months, and even better a few months after that. And wouldn't that be exciting?"
Playing Catch-Up
With iPhone 7, Apple is just keeping pace with its competition, according to a number of reviewers, including Geoffrey Fowler of The Wall Street Journal.
"Last year is when Apple should have put [the iPhone 7] on sale," he wrote. "Now Apple's just playing catch-up to Samsung, which added an equivalent camera and waterproofing to its Galaxy S7 six months ago."
Apple is also behind in display technology, with competitors already moving to OLED screens, maintained David McQueen, a research director at ABI Research.
"There is also still no mention of wireless charging or quick charge to the added listed of features, which surely must become a necessity now that the headphone jack has been removed," he told TechNewsWorld.
"For a 'major' upgrade year, consumers may feel a little short-changed when balancing between what has been added and what has been taken away before thinking of upgrading," McQueen said.
Upgrade or Not?
On the burning question of whether iPhone owners should upgrade to the 7, reviewers were divided.
"If you're already carrying an iPhone 6s, there's little need to upgrade, unless you're a photography nut or desperately need better battery life," Lisa Eadicicco wrote in Time.
Gordon Kelly, writing for Forbes, offered an opposing view.
"Pick up the iPhone 7 Plus with no knowledge of what's inside and you will be disappointed," he wrote.
"Apple really should have done more to modernize the exterior of the new model after three generations (smaller bezels, better grip, etc.) but there's still a lot here to enjoy," Kelly maintained. "That said, iPhone 7 Plus owners are likely to find just enough this year to keep them happy until Apple rips up the rulebook next year.
Wait 'til Next Year...
"Wait 'til Next Year," a refrain often heard around baseball parks at this time of year, was a common refrain among reviewers.
"This is a strong handset for sure," Edward Baig wrote in USA Today. "But if you can hold out, there's already talk that the truly dramatic leap forward for iPhone comes next year when this seminal smartphone celebrates its tenth anniversary."
At this point, Apple appears content at incrementally upgrading the iPhone rather than reimagining it, said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.
"Replacing the industry standard headphone jack with proprietary technology demonstrates that the company is also willing to continue raising the wall around its garden of products. If you prefer wider vistas, you'll have to find them with another vendor," he told TechNewsWorld.
"There are rumors that Apple is saving up surprises for next year's tenth anniversary model," he said. "If that's the case, all but the most dedicated Apple customers or photography fanatics would do well to skip upgrading to the iPhone 7 models."

Hackers Get Up Close and Personal With WH Staffer's Email
The employee's correspondence turned up on the DCleaks hacktivist site, which earlier this month posted the private emails of former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
The latest dump involves the private account of White House staffer Ian Mellul, whose personal emails were published on the DCleaks Twitter account and website, along with the claim that they represented just part of a trove of correspondence from February 2015 through June of this year.
Mellul's job entails coordination with the U.S. Secret Service and local law enforcement regarding the official travel of First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, according to DCleaks.
He reportedly also does work for the presidential campaign of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, whose operations repeatedly have been targeted in recent months.
First Lady's Passport
The posted emails include a range of mundane correspondence involving White House tours, various official trips, invoices and other discussions with the Clinton campaign and government officials.
More troubling is the site's posting of what it claims is the first lady's open passport. It is not clear why that image would be in the staffer's Gmail account.
"The Secret Service is aware of the alleged email hacking of a White House staffer," spokesperson Cathy Milhoan told TechNewsWorld. "The Secret Service is concerned any time unauthorized information that might pertain to one of the individuals we protect, or our operation, is allegedly disclosed."
However, the agency does not disclose information on investigations as a matter of policy, she added.

DCleaks earlier this month published a highly publicized trove of email correspondence from Powell, including some colorful commentary about Hillary Clinton and her presidential rival Donald Trump. It also includes some of Powell's remarks about his advice to Clinton concerning email practices after she became secretary of state in 2009.
In the latest breach, the targeting of a low-level staffer is not by happenstance. It's likely a targeted move to access proprietary government information through a back door.
This shouldn't be considered a breach, but rather an attack," said Christopher Budd, global threat communications manager at Trend Micro.
"The information around this indicates that this is a single, personal email account that has been compromised," he told TechNewsWorld.
The fact that the hackers targeted the personal account of the White House staffer may be an indication that they were unable to penetrate the official government email accounts at the White House, Budd argued.
Targeting private accounts is a classic tactic used by cyberespionage groups in "island-hopping attacks," he pointed out. The tactic involves going after private emails in order to breach government accounts and systems through "well-crafted spear phishing campaigns."
Influence Peddling?
DCleaks is a Russian-based influence outlet, according to ThreatConnect.
Guccifer 2.0 used DCleaks as a vehicle to dump emails obtained from the hacked Hillary Clinton campaign staffer, according to the firm.
Further, DCLeaks hosted a group of compromised emails from the account of Billy Rinehart Jr., a former United Nations Foundation official and regional director of the DNC, whose email was compromised in a similar fashion using tactics associated with Fancy Bear, ThreatConnect said.
Cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike previously linked Fancy bear and Cozy Bear to the hacker networks that targeted the Democratic National Committee earlier this year. Russian officials repeatedly hav edenied any connection to cyberattacks on the DNC, Clinton campaign or other agencies related to the election.
